Teaching about tragic events such as Grenfell is important, but it can also be challenging for teachers to navigate the emotional, ethical, and political dimensions involved. Many educators are concerned about how to address loss, responsibility, and injustice in ways that are accurate, sensitive, and developmentally appropriate.
Our project developed an approach grounded in education for disaster justice (EDJ), which frames disasters not as isolated accidents but as events shaped by social, political, and structural conditions. This approach supports teachers in helping students critically examine the causes and consequences of disasters, while foregrounding issues of justice, responsibility, and collective learning.
